Cosmetic Dentistry & Teeth Whitening in Pennington NJ Veneers by Our Cosmetic Dentist

Porcelain veneers, which are similar to dental crowns, cover the front surface of your teeth. Veneers are considered to be a type of cosmetic dental prosthesis. The uses for veneers include everything from uneven, misshapen teeth, crooked teeth, chipped teeth, gaps between teeth, and stained teeth.

Veneers block further staining and yellowing, and with consistent care, they will last for more than a decade – up to 15 years. Beyond normal care such as brushing, flossing, and bi-yearly dental cleanings, you will not need any further special care for veneers. Even so, you will want to be careful to not chew ice, pencil ends, or other non-food items, as well as being mindful about eating very hard foods.

Veneers, being made of porcelain, are a wonderful choice because they are said to look and feel just like your own teeth, as they have a similar consistency to the enamel. Dr. Angra has special training and can pick a shade of enamel that will match your other teeth and give you the best version of your smile.

What should I expect from my cosmetic dentist and during my Cosmetic Dentistry appointment?

As for the application of veneers, you should expect two appointments about three weeks apart. The first cosmetic dentistry appointment will include cleaning the treatment area, numbing it, and then the use of a dental drill to remove the layer of enamel that is necessary for later placing the veneer. Dental impressions and imaging will be completed at this appointment, as well, and sent to the lab for the creation of your veneers; meanwhile, you will have temporary veneers applied.

At the second appointment, your permanent veneers will be applied after each one is verified as being a good fit.

Am I a good candidate for veneers?

Anyone with a healthy mouth – that is, free of serious issues like active tooth decay, gum disease, or orthodontic issues – is probably a good fit for having veneers. If you have questions or concerns, Dr. Angra will be glad to go over the best options for you and your specific dental issues and concerns.

Cosmetic Dentistry & Teeth Whitening in Pennington NJ White Spot Treatment / ICON®

If you have white spots on your teeth and wonder how these come about, you may have experienced anything from demineralization (as a result of plaque), tooth trauma, poor oral hygiene, fluorosis (overexposure to fluoride during the first eight years of life), or the after-effects of orthodontic treatment. Check our Cosmetic Dentistry & Teeth Whitening in Pennington, NJ.

While these white spot lesions (WSLs) used to involve a similar process as filling a cavity with shots, drilling, and fillings, there is a better process available today called ICON® treatment – and this process is less painful as well as less invasive.

Basically, some areas of a tooth with a WSL have more minerals than other areas, and the result is uneven colors across the tooth. The white spots are actually places where the minerals cannot go as deep into the enamel-like the rest of the areas of the tooth. A micro-abrasion technique can be used to expose the tubules of the tooth, and then an etching material is used to ensure the resin can properly soak into the tooth. Keeping the tooth dry while applying the resin is very important. This resin bonds to the tooth and provides a more even color. Any excess resin is then removed, and a special light is used to harden the resin and basically cure it. After a little polishing, the repair, which can be done in about an hour, is complete.

ICON® is great for those who are apprehensive about needles and dental pain. It is also very beneficial for saving as much of the healthy tooth as possible and removing very little. Children are great candidates for ICON® treatments if they have developed these white spots due to a variety of reasons. As it is an affordable option, it is often preferred over porcelain veneers, although you may need a touchup after a few years have gone by. You can also proceed to other teeth-whitening processes after ICON®  treatment.
